A major movement is going on from tomorrow, Monday, demanding that the traditional Titumir College in the capital be made a university, Titumir Oikya Platform said. They said that we have made a demand to the government to realize our reasonable demand.
We first held a mass signature program to realize our demand. In that program, we sent a 94-page report to various government ministries in favor of our demand and highlighted the reasonableness of our demand.
But even then, when the authorities did not take notice, we peacefully held various programs on the college campus. After that, we held a program called Bangla Blockade. The sustainability of this program was short. Because we thought about the suffering of the people, this program was done on a limited scale. Titumir Oikya said that we also held programs called ‘Barasat Barricade to Mohakhali’ and ‘Death of Education’, but even then, since the authorities did not come to discuss this with us, we are trying to peacefully expand the scope of the program.
Titumir Oikya further informed us that we will not back down until our logical demands are met. Because this demand has been our demand for 27 years. They said that when Jagannath University, one of the universities in the capital, became a university in 2005, the demand for Titumir University was raised with them. Despite having all the qualifications to become a university, Titumir College became Jagannath University for political reasons.
Today, when we look at them, we see how much their literacy has improved. The most important part of a state is the education system, why are there so many excuses to improve that education system? The state’s responsibility is to make a citizen’s fundamental rights a priority. So since education is a fundamental right, why should we stay away from it?
Titumir Oikya called for this movement through a press conference last Thursday to make Titumir College a university. They said that creating public suffering is not our goal. We initially carried out the movement peacefully, but since the authorities did not pay attention to it, we were forced to take to the streets. The government will have to bear the entire responsibility for this. Titumir Oikya also said that we will block roads and railways in this movement. They said that we will continue this program from 11 am to 4 pm. They are expressing regret for the temporary inconvenience and say that the government will have to take responsibility for it. They said that this program will continue until the demands are met.
