On November 11 (Monday) at around 9 pm, a team of Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DB) arrested Dhirendra Debnath Shambhu, a former Awami League MP from the Barguna-1 constituency.
Dhaka Metropolitan Police Additional Commissioner Rezaul Karim Mallick confirmed the matter.
He said that the Awami League leader is an accused in several cases related to the casualties in the anti-discrimination student movement.
He is being brought to the DB office. Legal action is being taken against him.
Dhirendranath Debnath Shambhu has been arrested. There are several cases against him. He will be produced in court on Tuesday (November 12).
Dhirendra Debnath Shambhu’s ancestral home is in the Gov. High School Road area of Sadar Upazila of Barguna. Although he is a lawyer by profession, he is actively involved in politics. Shambhu was nominated seven times from 1991 to 2023 from the Barguna-1 constituency and became a member of parliament five times. But he lost to an independent candidate in the 12th National Parliament election.
After the Awami League government fell in the student-public uprising, the ACC started an investigation against Shambhu and his son Sunam Debnath on August 25. They are accused of amassing a large amount of illegal wealth as well as laundering money abroad.
