In July, students and the public took to the streets across the country to protest the Awami League’s 16-year authoritarian rule.
The then Prime Minister and Awami League President Sheikh Hasina was forced to flee to India after committing mass killings to suppress the protesters and was eventually ousted from power.
She did not stop there and is trying to create instability in the country by leaking call records one after another. In such a situation, there is a demand among the public to ban the Awami League as a party. In the meantime, there is a discussion about the party’s participation in the next election. Dr. Yunus, the head of the interim government, has clarified his position on the issue.
In an interview with the Indian media outlet The Hindu, Chief Advisor Dr. Muhammad Yunus said that the Awami League will be able to participate in the next election as a party. However, he also commented that the current government has not taken any decision regarding political parties.
The Prime Minister said that the BNP’s statement that all political parties should participate in the elections is that the government cannot ignore the opinion of a major party in the country.
When asked about Dr. Yunus’ objection to participating in the Awami League elections in the wake of such comments, he said that his government’s job is only to implement the wishes of politicians, which is basically pointing to the BNP regarding the elections, the Prime Minister said.
In response to another question, Dr. Yunus also said that he never saw himself as a politician. When asked about the formation of his own political party in 2007, he said that it was only for 10 weeks and was later closed.
At that time, Dr. Yunus commented that India should have celebrated the August 5 incident as a friendly country, and Dr. Yunus also objected to Sheikh Hasina’s contact with the country’s political workers from India.
However, he said that there is no problem with Hasina living in India. He said that the head of government said that Hasina has encouraged Bangladeshis to protest using Donald Trump as a shield.
So that the US can say that the Bangladesh government is working against them, this is interference in the internal and external affairs of another country.
In the interview, the chief advisor also commented that if Delhi does not return Hasina under the prisoner exchange agreement, relations with India will not be good.
He said that the interim government is very short-lived, so it is not possible to resolve all aspects of Bangladesh-India relations right now, but no subsequent government will accept this easily.
